Caribbean Batik Artist Robert McKendrick
Robert “Bob” McKendrick’s first exposure to art was at school at the Glasgow Academy in Scotland where he won his first prize for a watercolour piece. Over the following years he experimented with both oils and acrylics before taking up the art of Batik as his main hobby back in the 1970′s.
Robert is largely a self taught artist although he has attended several workshops in places around the world including Ontario, Canada and San Miguel D-Allende, in Mexico.
After moving to the Cayman Islands in 1987 he has conducted Batik workshops for the Visual Arts Society and has exhibited his work at many of their shows. His exquisite Batiks can be found in collections in the UK, North America, The Cayman Islands, The Bahamas and Turkey.
Since 2007, together with two other artists, Robert has held an annual Batik show at Full Of Beans in George Town Grand Cayman and has also demonstrated the techniques and skills of which he has become a master at the annual Art At Governors show.
In 2010 Robert had his first meeting with Arteccentrix and his work soon became a permanent fixture there. He has subsequently become an established and valued member artist, holding his first solo show at the Governors Square gallery in January 2011 which was a great commercial and artistic success. Robert’s beautiful work can now be viewed regularly at the new Arteccentrix studio in central George Town, including not only his Batik work but also his varied and original sculptures.
